Analysing Students’ Weaknesses in Mock Interview Assessment

Abstract

Having excellent communicative skills is vital for students as these skills are considered very important for them to be competitive especially in the job market. The mock interview assessment in DUE5012 Communicative English 3 under the topic ‘Job Hunting Mechanism’ serves as an indicator to assess students’ communicative skills. A total of 301 students from three polytechnics were involved in this study. Specifically, the study explored on the aspects of verbal and non-verbal communication skills used during the mock interview session. The data from the study were mainly from observations during the mock interview sessions. From the
observations, it is found that most students faced difficulties in language skills and body gesture. Their lack of proficiency in the English language influence their interviewing skills and confidence level. The study highlights the importance of improving their English language skills and confidence level in order to meet the demands of their future employers.
