Abstract

Forensic Engineering is defined as the application of engineering science to the investigation of
materials, products, structures, components that either fail, do not operate or function. Kelantan is a developing
state and many construction projects are being implemented. Nevertheless, some of the buildings are poorly
constructed and lack of maintenance after completion. One of the material components that need attention is
concrete. The main objective of this study is to determine the cause of concrete defect, the factors that cause
concrete defects and the problems faced during the maintenance work done. This paper is focused on
implementing the forensic engineering and should follow systematic methodologies for information gathering,
developing failure hypotheses, comprehensive studies (analysis and design checks) and Investigation reports test
procedures and reports. It is the right time to introduce a systematic assessment method for managing the
maintenance work. The purpose of this research in the end is to develop a rating system to be used as an
identification of the defects present according to the way to organize and prioritized the maintenance of the
existing building needed. The data are collected through inspection are recorded and then analysed by using “The
standard guideline for Building Condition Assessment (BCA) (JKR 21602-0004-13)”. The BCA has never been
implemented in Public Work Department of Kelantan before this. The scope of this study) to find out the material
used on the existing building as for the findings of this project, beside that it was found that the BCA can be
applied in the process of existing building inspection. The method of concrete repairs that h is patching and sealing
here. Furthermore, the main conclusion is that the overall rating of the building managed to be obtained based
from data gathered through the BCA process done where the building was rated 3.
