The Use of Social Networking Sites (SNSS) and Its Implications on Academic Performance of Polytechnic Students
Main Article Content
Abstract
This study aims to explore the usage of social networking sites (SNSs) among Politeknik Kota Bharu (PKB) students and analyse its implications on their academic performance. 108 respondents from 5 different semesters were involved in this study. They were randomly chosen and represented all 4 major departments in PKB. The respondents were requested to fill out an online survey sent through Whatsapp application. The data gathered were then analysed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 26. Results from the survey show that the primary usage of SNSs among PKB students is for sending and receiving messages, while the 3-4 hours category recorded the highest percentage for the estimated time spent among students per day for using the SNSs. A significant finding of the survey concluded that the SNSs is useful and can be a great medium for a plethora of study purposes among polytechnic students. However, the adverse effect of the SNSs might affect their academic performance as well if it is not wisely managed or overused. Therefore, this study would also intend to suggest proper time management by the students in dealing with these SNSs.
